Recently, Kevin and the Cube have joined Commonvision's annual Fruit Tree Tour. This group spends 2 and a half months every year traveling throughout California visiting schools and community programs and leading drumming, creative expression and tree-planting workshops. They travel in a fleet of 7 vehicles powered by recycled vegetable oil and do performances about the importance of caring for the planet. For many of the children, this was their first introduction to many of the issues involved with climate change, and for many it was the first time they had ever planted a tree. A very inspiring group.

Personally, what feels so good about Commonvision is the depth of their commitment. While many projects compromise in aspects of their process in order to obtain a desired goal, Commonvision embraces their message in every aspect of their work. From the vegetable oil that powers the buses, to the compost bins on board, this group provides a sustainable model of positive community living.

The fruit trees that they plant reflect this message. They see planting trees as a way to tackle many problems and to educate people, young and old, about the way they can have positive impact. The fruit trees they plant are seen as a way to promote local agriculture, and in particular, provide a means for school cafeterias to provide organic fruit to their children. The trees also help fight global warming by producing oxygen. Furthermore, and most profoundly, planting fruit trees is seen as a way to reinvigorate a person's connection with the earth. By seeing the simple process that fruit comes from trees which grows from the earth, people may begin to understand that we are no so disconnected from this planet which sustains us.

The work they do is no small feat either. This year alone, CommonVision planted almost 1,000 fruit trees. Thats alot of oranges, persimmons, apples, pears and figs! (and more!).

check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAZ5v4hW9Fo
